Have you ever purchased the perfect shirt, only for it to shrink in the wash before you ever had a chance to wear it?

Washing and drying articles of clothing seems simple enough, right? In theory, you put the clothing in the washer machine, add some laundry detergent, pick a cycle, and start the washer. Then, you transfer the clothing from the washer to the dryer. Once the dryer turns off, you should be able to wear your new shirt or outfit.

But, as you put the article of clothing on, you are rudely greeted by a shirt or outfit that is too snug. It doesn’t fit right and doesn’t feel comfortable. You probably think, “Why, doesn’t this fit? It looked and felt great when I tried it on at the store!” Then, reality sets in and you come to the conclusion that your short-lived favorite shirt shrunk in the process of washing or drying it.

So how do you prevent your clothing from shrinking in the future?

You first need to identify why your clothing shrunk in the first place. The reason why is because your clothes are getting too hot during the washing process.

If you are washing an article of clothing that is made of wool or cotton, it is best to wash your clothes in cold water. That’s because clothing made of cotton and wool absorbs a great deal of water while being washed. It’s important to note, not all clothing absorbs a lot of water while in the washer. Nylon or polyester fabric don’t absorb a plethora of water, therefore, you don’t have to worry about those types of fabric shrinking in hot water.
