On Monday I revealed number 5: "Die Hard 2: Die Harder." Another bows tomorrow in our number 2 spot, but today is "Spider-man 2"
Released on June 30th (in time for the 4th of July holiday) in 2004, this was the second of the "Spider-man" trilogy starring Toby Maguire at the titular character and his alter ego, "Peter Parker." Like the "Star Wars" and "Die Hard" series, the sequel proved to be a better movie than the original.
Set two years after the events of "Spider-Man," the film finds Peter Parker struggling to manage both his personal life and his duties as a super hero, while Dr. Otto Octavius becomes a diabolical villain after a failed experiment kills his wife and leaves him neurologically fused to mechanical tentacles. Spider-Man must stop him from successfully recreating the experiment, which threatens to destroy the city.
I learned to read from a subscription to "Spider-man" comics that my mom gave me, so this is one of those characters that I'm very possessive about. I always liked Maguire's REALLY nerdy and awkward Peter Parker. And this movie NAILED his portrayal. It's akin, in my opinion to Christopher Reeve's gold-standard acting job as "Clark Kent"/"Superman."
"Spider-man 2" went on to gross more than a billion dollars worldwide to finish 2004 as the year's third highest grossing movie behind "Shrek 2," and "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban."
