Probably because they were...shot to tape (yes, I remember video cameras that you had to buy tape cartridges for!).
Anyway, once video went digital and you could just shoot, delete, and re-shoot everything, "planned spontaneity" became the order of the day and that's when we quit watching shows like AFV.
Then I came across this video today that reminds me of "the old days." See if these kids don't make you at least smile a lot.
