Captain Jim’s DIY Corner – DIY or DIWhy?
Before launching into any do-it-yourself home improvement project, make sure it’s a project you SHOULD do.

Before launching into any do-it-yourself home improvement project, make sure it's a project you SHOULD do.
DIY projects should improve your home and increase its value. That's why it's important to steer clear of what I call "DIWhy?" projects. Modifications that are radical or difficult for a subsequent homeowner to undo should be avoided.
Let's say your teen wants to paint his bedroom black. It may seem a like a good idea at the time, but covering up that black paint is going to be a hassle. Go with a more sensible color instead.
Another difficult-to-undo project is wall texturing. Sometimes, texturing is necessary if a wall has been damaged by wallpaper removal or other "trauma," but restoring that wall after texturing will likely require complete removal of the drywall.
So before you buy the supplies be sure to ask yourself: Is it DIY or DIWhy?
Until next time, happy DIYing!
