In January, 1980, I was ten year old and my beloved Houston Oilers were in their second straight AFC Championship Game against the hated, Pittsburgh Steelers.
Down the entire game, my heroes in blue roared back to apparently tie the game at 17 in the third. Watch below and see how the refs blew THIS call:
Instead of a MONSTER shot of momentum, this was a gut punch that the Oilers never recovered from. On a positive note, THIS IS THE PLAY that inspired the movement in the NFL to add instant replay. However, in my and in the opinion of millions of other Houstonians, it was the screwjob of all time, and cost our team a sure Super Bowl title (we'd have killed the Rams just like the Steelers did).
Sure I was upset, and cried my eyes out, but as long as humans are involved in sports, human errors will be made. And that's part of the game.
So, it sucks. It hurts.
You're not the first, you won't be the last.
BUT PUT ON YOUR BIG BOY UNDERWEAR AND GET OVER IT
Someone should tell Harry Connick Jr. this. He sent NFL Commissioner, Roger Goodell a letter following the controversial "no call" of pass interference against the Saints in their NFC Title Game against the Rams yesterday.
"Please know that I would've written this letter regardless of which teams were playing in the NFC Championship," Harry said in his letter. "To not call the pass interference/helmet-to-helmet penalties at the end of the game was one of the most disgraceful no-calls I have ever seen."
First let me call BS on Connick, a life-long New Orleans resident and Saints fan writing a letter to the Commish if the Tampa Bay Bucs and Minnesota Vikings were playing. PUH-LEASE.
Connick went on to make the declaration that "until changes are made, specifically booth review of outcome-altering no-calls" he won't be watching the Super Bowl.
Do you REALLY think the NFL cares if Harry Connick Jr. doesn't watch the game? To be frank, the NFL wouldn't care if the whole city of New Orleans didn't. The Super Bowl will still be the most watched event on TV, in the world, this whole year-and it won't be close.
