Spring and summer in the Carolinas mean spending a lot more time outside in the sun.

Whether you go to the pool, beach, golf course, tennis court, hiking trail, or just your backyard, you need to make sure you're protecting yourself from the sun's harmful UV rays.

As I've gotten older and have noticed all the damage my childhood sunburns have done, I'm a lot more careful about covering up when I know I'll be outdoors for long periods of time. I'm amassing quite the hat collection.

The other essential is sunscreen and Consumer Reports has ranked the best ones for 2019. Lotions scored the highest again this year, but there are also some good and inexpensive sprays on the list, as well as mineral sunscreens (titanium dioxide and zinc oxide) and options without oxybenzone:
