The most famous spy in history, is changing genders.
James Bond, Agent 007, has been a staple in movie theaters since 1962's "Dr. No." No matter what actor has portrayed him since, he is essentially the same character: suave, cool, cocky, dangerous...every woman wants to be with him, ever man wants to be him.
According to reports, at the end of current movie being filmed, James Bond will retire, and his designation, "007" will be passed on to actress Lashana Lynch, who many may know from her role as fighter pilot "Maria Rambeau" in Captain Marvel.
This is a DREADFUL idea that effectively is putting a death nail in the most successful movie franchise of all-time.
Look, before you go off on me for being racist (Lynch is black), or misogynistic, this has nothing to do with either. I am a passionate James Bond fan. Not only do I own nearly every movie, but I've read all the books written by the character's two primary authors (creator Ian Fleming and John Gardner who wrote the charater in the 80s and 90s).
The powers-that-be claim "This a Bond for the modern era who will appeal to a younger generation while sticking true to what we all expect in a Bond film."
No, it's not.
The last two James Bond movies have each made more than $1 billion dollars in worldwide box office receipts. Perhaps I've missed how the character no longer is registering with people?
Again, that's BILLION, with a "B."
Of all the things I thought that politically correct BS in this world would change, James Bond would never have been on the list.
While I have NO PROBLEM with gender equity and equality, as a man, I just don't think there's anything wrong with being a man...or having male characters in movies and television.
Not everything or everyone has to be "gender neutral." Not every male character will be better served being played as a woman. And the converse is true as well. Is anyone clamoring to see a male version of "Charlie's Angels?"
Anyone outraged that the reboot of "Mary Poppins" last year was not played by a dude and called, "Mort Poppins?"
And if you think I have no basis for this opinion, one question: how did that all-female "Ghostbusters" work out?
