Harley Race’s legendary wrestling career spanned nearly four decades. During that time Race won eight NWA World Championships, managed two wrestlers to the WCW World Championship and was involved in operating the NWA territories in Kansas City and St. Louis. Growing up in Houston, Texas, professional wrestling was huge.  And once a year, there would be a night that all the champions would wrestle on the same card.  At that time there were three, recognized "World Heavyweight Champions":

The WWWF had a very young, Bob Backlund.  The AWA's champion was Nick Bockwinkel.  However, the one that most people put above all others was the NWA Champion, Harley Race (above, w/his leg in the air).

Harley Race spoke with a growl and looked like he was wanting to do nothing but inflict pain and damage on you.  He was in and out of the ring, one....tough...guy.

I saw him have amazing matches with Andre The Giant, Ric Flair, and others.

Later in his career (at the end, really) he had a run in the then, WWF, as "King Harley Race," but that was a far cry from who he was in his heyday.

Harley Race died today at the age of 76.  No cause was given (at this time), but it had been no secret that Race had been in poor health for some time.

No less than Ric Flair paid proper tribute on Twitter

RIP, Champ.
