This is always a highlight for me.  I love the notion of this contest.  The 20th North American Wife Carrying Championships were held over the weekend in Maine.

In the WORLD Championship version, all you win is your wife's weight in beer.  Apparently we do things a little differently and better here.

A couple from Delaware, Olivia Rowling and Jerome Roehm, finished in 55.95 seconds, took home six cases of beer and five times Rowling’s weight in cash, totaling $555.

So cash AND beer,  Nice.  Video from this year is not available yet, but if you're wondering what this event looks like, here are the highlights from last year's competition.

The "World" version of this competition began in 1992 and if you're wondering where this tradition comes from,  according to wife-carrying.org, wife carrying originated in Finland.  Its history is derived from the legend of one "Herkko Rosvo-Ronkainen, or “Ronkainen the Robber.” His MO was, legendarily, to terrorize villages and steal women, carrying them away on his back.
