This is an anniversary date for me. A big one. And I'd all but forgotten it. And coincidentally, it's also the anniversary of one of the biggest days in World Series history.
Growing up, we had a black and white TV. Not that color wasn't available, just that my parents did not place much value on television.
However, their son did.
I forget where we were now (my mom, my sister, and me), I just remember that Dad wasn't with us. And we were ALWAYS together as a family back then.
However, he was home when we got there and asked me if I wanted to watch the World Series game. Being a budding sports nut, I enthusiastically ran to the couch and Dad went to turn on the TV.
What I was greeted with was the greenest green I'd ever seen: the grass at Yankee Stadium. It October 18, 1977, and it was Game 6 of the 1977 World Series. This is what I saw.
Reggie Jackson became "Mr. October," and I became a Yankees fan. After all, my beloved Houston Astros stunk and they were winners. It's always more fun to root for a winner.
Flash forward a few years, and now I'll be watching my Astros try to wipe the Yankees out of the playoffs tonight. On my color TV.
And I'm sure I'll be on the phone with Dad.
And I won't be rooting for the Yankees.
