Although it is not a mystery as to what happened to the crew (more on that in a second), it still had to be a REALLY eerie sight to see an enormous 2200-ton cargo ship simply wash ashore...abandoned.
The Coast Guard has requested that people stay away from the "ghost ship" that has run aground near the fishing village of Ballycotton in County Cork, Ireland in the wake of Storm Dennis.
Measuring 252-feet in length, the vessel had been drifting for well over a year. Originally built in 1976, the crew of the Alta first abandoned the vessel 16 months ago after its engines failed in the middle of the Atlantic. Unable to repair the problem, the 10-man crew were eventually rescued by the US coastguard and transported to Puerto Rico.
