We have some tips and tricks for you to keep your mail safe.

Residents should be on the alert for a serial mail thief in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg/York County areas. According to officials, there have been over 30 reports of stolen mail since the beginning of this year. The reports state that mailboxes were targeted late at night and the mailbox doors were often left open.

York County Sheriff’s office has a few tips to prevent mail theft:

  • Pick up your mail as soon as possible
  • If you have a change of address, immediately inform the Post Office
  • Report all mail theft suspicions to Postal Inspector
  • If you'll be out of town let the Post Office know so they can hold your mail
  • Refrain from sending cash in the mail
  • If you don't receive a check or other valuable mail on time, immediately contact the issuing company
