Wisconsin Badgers quarterback Graham Mertz has to feel like his life is on a amazing roller coaster right now. It all started for the redshirt freshman on Friday as he was nearly flawless in the Badgers opening game Friday night against Illinois, throwing 5 touchdown passes.
Then, Graham Mertz tested positive for COVID-19, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. He will be taking a PCR nasal swab test in order to confirm his result, but the result of that test has not yet been returned to the university.
NOW...here's where it gets interesting and points out the difference between the Big 10 returning to football and everyone else to this point.
If this swab comes back positive, Mertz is GONE for 21 days. No ifs, ands, or buts. That means NO practice, No games, No team activities of any kind. Wisconsin's new star would miss games for the No. 9 Badgers against Nebraska, Purdue and Michigan.
To point out the differences, in other conferences, a positive test is followed by quarantine. Once that person/coach is asymptomatic, if they have two consecutive negative tests (spaced 24 hours apart), they are cleared to return to action. Most have just missed one game at most.
