Catherine’s Hot Takes On The Country Music Association Awards
For fans of the Chief, it was the night you have been waiting for. Finally your man won a major award on a major awards show. As always I have a few thoughts on last night’s show. And my favorite moment may surprise you.
Let’s go back to the beginning. MUCH better than the ACM’s. We are a little farther into the pandemic and it was ok to have some people in the audience. Of course these were the beautiful Nashville people but there were people in the audience and that was nice. It felt more normal.
Loved the Charlie Daniels tribute in the beginning. The sound was amazing. Did they sing to tracks? I don’t know but it sounded amazing.
Reba and Darius. How do we like that pairing? That is a hard gig I don’t care who you are. Reba is a seasoned vet (and sure was proud to show off that new man of hers) and this was the first time she co hosted with Darius Rucker. He seemed nervous, a little rushed and they need to fire those “comedy” writers. Oh boy, the puns, that was rough..
There is so much to say and there were many wonderful performances but I will tell you my favorite moment. It was slight but I noticed and it really stood out to me. During the Charlie Pride tribute, Charlie Pride himself took the stage after an open from Jimmie Allen. Charlie has had 40 #1 hits, he’s a legend and I grew up on his music because of my parents. I was looking forward to his performance and he tried. He really tried. The fact is as we age so do our vocal chords and he was struggling. But he did great! My favorite moment was when Jimmie Allen joined him, he MATCHED him. He didn’t try to best him on his own song or over sing , he simply joined him and humbly matched him. I noticed that and I loved it.
I also loved Dan and Shay’s acceptance speech. I think they will have this award locked in for as long as they are together. It’s clear they love one another and they aren’t afraid to let the world know.
Here are a few of the major wins last night.
Single and song of the year and female vocalist: Maren Morris
Male Vocalist and Album of the Year: Luke Combs
