It's Mecklenburg county's only public swimming beach but unfortunately it will not have the man power to be able to safely stay open, at least not for now.
Despite raising pay and recruiting, the county has filled just 86 of 247 available lifeguard jobs and without enough lifeguards it just isn't safe. Who knows exactly why more lifeguards aren't pursuing the jobs, perhaps the potential for very close contact with swimmers is scaring them off. It is unclear.
