Sad news this morning in the world of children's literature. Beloved children's author and illustrator Eric Carle has passed away at the age of 91. My mom was an elementary school reading teacher for years. So I have very fond memories of Eric's books. He was probably best known for "The Very Hungry Caterpillar". Other recognizable works include "Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See?", "The Mixed Up Chameleon", and "The Very Busy Spider". His illustrations are unique and instantly recognizable. He sold more than 170 million books in dozens of languages all across the world.

Carle passed away Sunday at his home in North Hampton, Massachusetts. His family released a statement announcing his passing, but no cause of death was given.

Rest in peace and thank you for all the happiness you brought to children everywhere Eric Carle.
