Father’s Day Golf Commercial Leaves Us Both In A Puddle

Me

Father's Day weekend is doubly special for parents and children who share the love and passion for the game of golf.   You see, historically the US Open Golf Championship is held over that time.   So, not only do we celebrate "Dads," but the game that he likely introduced you to as well.   Our son, kinda didn't have a choice in finding out about the game early on.  Hogan, is named for Ben Hogan, a golfer who overcame a disastrous car collision with a bus to become one of the greatest golfers of all-time.  His courage and perseverance has always been inspiring to me and when our son was born at 29 weeks, weighing 2 pounds/4 ounces, it seemed like an appropriate name for a fighter.  Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not "that dad" trying to live my life over again through my kid.  No, Hogan has always loved the sport and as you can see below, it's been a major part of our father/son time together over the years.

His first club. I must have re-taped the head to the shaft 50 times

The first time he told me he wanted to learn to hit the golf ball. This is the driving range on 74 in Indian Trail

A familiar sight on weekends since he was 9

Our first "golf trip" adventure was in Hilton Head. Would love to head back there

Happy couple here as we won a father/son tournament

2 summers ago. Down in the Sandhills. Our favorite place to play golf anywhere in the world

Ok, you get the idea.  Anyway.  Hogan is now a rising Sophomore at Coastal Carolina University.  He's a PGM Major (marketing degree with an emphasis on the business of golf), and as such has to work an internship every summer.  Since May 15, he's been working at a club in Charlottesville, Virginia.  He's learning a lot and working his tail off.  However, between his being away at school and now working in Virginia, I've had to MAJORLY alter my playing partners.  I miss him and our time on the course together terribly.  We did get to go see him this weekend, so that was great.  And we got to watch the tournament together on Saturday as he had the day off.  Debbie and I returned on Sunday and as bummed as I was, I looked forward to watching the tournament.  Then, this commercial happened.

I'm a "crier" anyway, but this not only left me a blubbering mess, but his mom (Debbie) too.  You see...Hogan calls me "Pops."  And this commercial is our life in golf flashing before my eyes.  Damn, I'm losing it writing this right now.  I'll blame it on "allergies."
