The largest and most famous bike race in the world is the Tour de France. There have been more than 700 days between the conclusion of the 2019 race (the last time fans were allowed to line the streets and observe the event) and Day 1 of this year's race (where fans are allowed back after the Covid-19 Pandemic). And what should have been a joyous occasion for this event could not have gone more horribly wrong. Only 28 miles into the event, a fan held a cardboard sign in front of the riders that read “Allez Opi-Omi!” which is a hello message to her grandparents. One problem, she didn't pull the sign away from the riders in time and German cyclist Tony Martin could not avoid a collision. And anytime there's a collision in that race, it's a domino effect for a lot of riders. It's being hailed as the worst wreck in Tour history.
As you might imagine, the crash-causing spectator was not exactly running to authorities to claim responsibility. As of yesterday morning, a legal investigation is underway in western France. Authorities are looking for the woman who now faces up to a year in prison and a $18,000 fine. Additionally, Tour de France organizers plan to sue the fan as well.
