He was 88 years old.
Former U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld died Wednesday of undisclosed causes, his family has announced.
“It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Donald Rumsfeld, an American statesman and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather,” reads a statement released by Rumsfeld’s family. “At 88, he was surrounded by family in his beloved Taos, New Mexico.”
Credited for orchestrating the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, Rumsfeld worked under Presidents Gerald Ford and George W. Bush, making him the youngest and oldest person in history to serve as the country’s defense secretary. He also worked as an ambassador to NATA under President Richard Nixon.
