We got our first hummingbird feeder this year and we did it all wrong. We went with the reddish liquid that came with the feeder and it turns out we did not attract a single bird with it. If you see and hear birds in your backyard you'll be happy to know that there are things you can do to make your outdoor space more attractive to your favorite feathered friends, hummingbirds.
According to the National Audubon Society there are a few things you can do to make your yard and feeder more welcoming.
Grow native plants in your landscape . Plant native plants to your area especially like flowers with bold colors. In our area, day lilly and azalea work well.
Set up a nectar feeder. Well you have to have that. We LOVE watching the birds at our feeder..Simply creating homemade nectar can do the trick...we use three parts water to one part sugar to attract our little guys. It is best to clean and change the nectar in the feeder every few days especially in warm weather.
Provide fresh water close to the feeder and bright flowers. We simply have a bird bath there and change the water out every day or every other day.
Feature red floral at the feeder. Hummingbirds can detect red better than any other color.
