Community Kick Off Event for Local Denton, North Carolina Injured Veteran
As part of the Homes For Our Troops (HFOT) program, on November 20, 10:00 a.m., a specially adapted custom home will be built for Army Specialist Jeremy Young.
The Community Kickoff event signifies the start of the build process and will introduce SPC Young to the community. The event will be held at Larry Furr Presents Southern Theater & Event Center, 18639 South Hwy, Denton, NC 27239. The public is welcome to attend this local event.
As we honor Jeremy Young, let us reflect on his service. Jeremy wanted to join the military his entire life. He joined the Army in 2010 as an Infantryman and was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry, 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division.
On July 3, 2012, during his first deployment, Specialist Young and his unit were in an overwatch position in Eastern Afghanistan when an Afghan Soldier turned on them, shooting at SPC Young and four others. SPC Young was just a few feet away from the attacker, who shot him 18 times. The gunshot wounds caused severe damage to SPC Young’s right leg, right hand, left hand, and left arm.
The home is built for SPC Young will feature more than 40 major special adaptations such as widened doorways for wheelchair access, a roll-in shower, and kitchen amenities that include pull-down shelving and lowered countertops. The home will also alleviate the mobility and safety issues associated with a traditional home. This includes navigating a wheelchair through narrow hallways or over thresholds or reaching for cabinets that are too high.
HFOT has built over 320 since the organization’s inception in 2004. Homes For Our Troops relies on contributions from donors, supporters, and corporate partners for the building of each Veteran’s home. Community members may hold fundraisers or make donations.
