There are two names synonymous with Christmas TV specials to me: Rankin and Bass. These are the two producers behind the brilliant, puppet/stop-motion animation specials like “Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer,” “The Year Without A Santa Claus,” and my personal favorite, “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town.” The latter gets to celebrate its 50th Christmas of entertaining countless children when it airs Friday night on ABC.
As much as I love the ability to record and never miss a TV show (I can argue that the DVR is man’s second greatest invention after the wheel), there was something about growing up at a time, before DVR or (showing my age) VCR, when these specials were appointment viewing. You missed them…and you missed them! Our son had them on DVD and watched them over and over again. You know what tho…he’s 20 now…and I bet he and I will sneak a peak on Channel 9 Friday night at 8.
