The last thing they thought of when they went skiing in Avery County this past weekend was this type of injury.  Several skiers were reportedly hurt after a hydrant burst at Beech Mountain resort.  You consider falling or ski equipment failure, maybe running into fellow skiers but you never think of a hydrant failure as you are riding the ski lift.

A damaged hydrant sprayed a blast of cold water for several minutes onto people on the lift that were just passing by at the wrong time.  Some people had to be taken to the hospital with non life threatening injuries.

So, what happened?  Reportedly someone skied into the hydrant causing the cold blast of water to erupt onto the unsuspecting lift riders.  As soon as someone notified the resort workers, the hydrant was turned off.
