Gallery: Happy 60th Birthday Garth Brooks
Garth and I go way back;) He was one of the first country music artists I got to meet when I started in country radio back in the (gulp) 90s. In most “meet and greets” backstage; artists spend a few minutes with you, shake your hand, get your picture and send you on your way. Not Garth, he treated us and our listeners to a full-on meal backstage and time just chatting with him on the couch. At the time his kids were little, and they were running around. Trisha was opening for him on the “Seven” tour, and she was there lovely as always backstage.
When you talk to most of us country radio folks, you would be hard pressed to find anyone that would say a bad word about how Garth treats people. Let me give you another example.
When Tanner and I interviewed him in Nashville a couple of years ago, it wasn’t so much how he treated me but how he treated my husband that warmed my heart. You see my husband is a reserved guy. He goes with me to these things to help me, not to insert himself. When Garth came for the interview people were falling all over themselves to have a moment of his time. My husband stands back as we prepare to interview Garth but before he sits down, he notices Rick standing off to the side. Garth walks over to Rick and gets his attention and then points at me and said, “Is that your wife”. “It is” Rick says. Then Garth said, “what do you think of all this?”, Rick just said “hectic”. Garth threw his head back laughing and said, “tell me about it”. He seemed to appreciate Rick’s brevity and accuracy of the situation. And I sure enjoyed watching that exchange.
There is a lot that can be said about Garth the musician. Now you know a little about Garth, the guy. And what a guy he is.
