According to Spectrumlocalnews.com, a doctor from North Carolina will soon start an amazing trip. Dr. Matthew Harmody will hike to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. He plans to reach the top on March 10th, World Kidney Day.

Harmody is joining a group of 22 athletes from around the country called Kidney Donor Athletes, an advocacy group for kidney donation. He says more than 100,000 people are on the kidney transplant list in the U.S. Donate Life says about 7,000 people die each year waiting for one.

In North Carolina, Donate Life says 3,000 people in the state are currently awaiting an organ transplant, and 90% of those are waiting for a kidney. Dr. Harmondy's father passed away from Kidney disease and he is trying to bring awareness to the need for donors. He has donated himself.

To learn how you can become a kidney donor, you can head to the National Kidney Foundationwebsite.
