It’s an odd food combination that somehow works. I’m talking about chicken and waffles, which has its roots in 1600s Pennsylvania Dutch cooking. However, in those days the dish was made with stewed chicken. The fried chicken version emerged later in the South and became popular in the soul food kitchens of Harlem in the 1930s and ’40s.

On Monday, August 8th, people all over America will celebrate National Fried Chicken and Waffle Day. That’s not to be confused with National Chicken and Waffles Day on October 20th. I’m okay with celebrating twice a year.

According to PR Newswire, all Charlotte-area Metro Diner locations are marking the fifth anniversary of National Fried Chicken & Waffle Day on Monday (8/8) with a special dine-in offer. Metro Diner is knocking $5 off your Fried Chicken & Waffle order. You can partake of the restaurant chain’s No. 1 dish for just $10.99, instead of the regular price of $15.99.

Metro Diner’s famous Fried Chicken & Waffle dish comes with half a fried chicken nestled next to a fluffy Belgian waffle topped with powdered sugar and sweet strawberry butter, served with the diner’s signature sweet and spicy sauce. Metro Diner starts preparing the chicken 48 hours before serving. It’s brined for 24 hours and then marinated for an additional 24 hours.

In addition to their dine-in offer, Metro Diner is also hosting a social contest where one lucky fan has the chance to win free Fried Chicken & Waffles for one year. Metro Diner has locations across North Carolina, including Pineville, Matthews, and Huntersville.

North Carolina Is Home To One Of The Best Drive In Restaurants

There is something nostalgic about drive-in restaurants, even as someone who didn’t grow up when they were plentiful. And I’m not talking about the drive-through fast-food spots. Or even Sonic (though I’m 100% a Sonic fan). You know that old-school classic drive-in: burgers, milkshakes, bbq, fries. My mouth is already watering. While many of these businesses have closed in recent years, some are still left across the country. In fact, Charlotte North Carolina has one of the best drive in restaurants in the US.

This list was compiled by Cheapism. They featured 30 drive in restaurants across the country that are still going strong. There are locations in both Carolinas, California, Illinois, and many other stations. Keep reading for the North Carolina classic that made the Cheapism Drive In Restaurants list as well as some others that are somewhat nearby!
