North Carolina Plans To Widen I-85 In Gaston County

According to WBTV, the state of North Carolina is looking to widen a strech of I-85. They will increase the lanes going through Gaston county. This project will take the highway from three to four lanes in each direction.

The plan is to widen 10 miles of the interstate, spanning from Exit 17 in Gastonia to Exit 27 in Mount Holly. They will be widening the road from six to eight lanes total. The project will cost over $600 million. And will take a lot of time to complete. NCDOT says it will take years to finish once construction starts.

People living in Gaston County say the evening rush hour is one of the worse timeframes to travel in that area, often delaying people by an hour. This will make it a lot worse. But it should eventually help with some of the congestion.
