Horrifying Video: 16 People Injured When Fair Ride Falls 50 Feet

At least 16 people are recovering from injuries after a ride malfunctioned at a fair in India. According to  Fox5ny, it caused riders to plummet 50 feet to the ground. Of those injured, at least five were children. The accident occurred Sunday night at the Dussehra Fairgrounds in Mohali. It appears that everyone survived. That is the good news.

The ride, a high-rise carousel that lifts passengers 50 feet off the ground and spins them around, had reached the top of the pole it rotates around when it suddenly broke free and came hurtling down to the ground. The ride hit the ground so hard that a number of passengers broke free of their safety harnesses and flew out of their seats.

Witnesses say fair organizers "fled the scene" immediately after the crash. Police say they're planning to "hold an inquiry, and strict action will be taken against the guilty." Is it crazy that people put their trust in life-threatening rides like this?
