Why We Have A Love and Fascination For The Queen

Queen Elizabeth II

The Queen has ruled for longer than any other Monarch in British history, becoming a much loved and respected figure across the globe. At 95 years old, she is known for her sense of duty and her devotion to a life of service as an important figurehead for the UK and the Commonwealth during times of enormous social change.

I have been teased about this from my friends as long as I can remember.  I have always had a love, fascination and reverence for the royal family. Probably more than I should.  I have watched every show, movie, documentary on them. And the books! There is one on my coffee table right now.   I think it is because Queen Elizabeth has just always been there, all my life .She was walking and until yesterday, living history.  For seventy years she has shown up through the rubble strewn streets of London encouraging people after World War 2, through Prime Ministers as far back as Winston Churchill and has met every president since Dwight Eisenhower.

Through wars, strife, pandemics, scandals and divorces, she shows up.  "Never complain, never explain" is reportedly the royal credo and I admire that.  I wear my heart on my sleeve and sometimes I don't feel like showing up.  She shows up. Was she always perfect, of course not.  But she knew the assignment and she carried it out, right up to the very end. And she has done it for seventy years!  Incredible.

Another one of the reasons why I like her and have enjoyed following her all these years is her reported sense of humor.  According to MSN.com the Queen actually met a hiker while out on a walk outside Balmoral (her home in Scotland). The hiker did not recognize her.  Can you imagine? He asked if she had ever met the queen and she replied, "I haven't but Dick here meets her regularly"(referring to her bodyguard with her at the time). The hiker then asked him what the queen was like.  He replied, "on she can be cantankerous at times but she has a lovely sense of humor".  To get more details on this story check it out right here.

I know it sounds silly but I feel a deep sadness and personal loss.  There will never be another human being on the planet like her and that's special.
