Cody Johnson’s George Strait Cover Is Nothing Short Of Great
Famously our country fought The American Revolution to gain independence from King George and England. Our forces were led by our future first President and “Father of our Country,” George Washington. There have been numerous great United States military leaders from Custer to Patton who bore the name George. In my lifetime as an adult, America has been led by two Bush men named, George. The name George has real significance in history. That all being said, growing up in Texas there has been and will always be but one George worthy of sitting on a throne, and that’s George Strait. When Debbie and I won our CMA award, they asked for quotes from us about various nominees. I made a statement then for the official program and it still rings true today. “There are two kinds of country music male singers: George Strait and those that wish they were George Strait. Just ask any male country singer from the Lone Star State about its “King George” and they speak with the reverent tones usually reserved for the subject of the New Testament. It’s because of this that you RARELY see anyone try to cover his songs. Once they’ve been done to that level of perfection, what’s the point? Which leads me to this cover of “You Look So Good in Love” from Cody Johnson.
From Strait’s 1983 “Right or Wrong” album “You Look So Good in Love” became his third number one song (he’s ONLY had between 44-60 depending on the chart you hold gospel). This 2016 video of the former bull rider turned country singer is beautiful in its simplicity. When it’s just you, your guitar and your voice, there’s nowhere to hide. And man, does Cody Johnson deliver the goods on this one. Alright, I can’t resist. As good as this version from Cody is, I can’t let it go without reminding you of the original, from the King himself.
