The best way to describe my wife's mood once Thanksgiving is on the way and Christmas is just around the corner is "giddy."  A big part of it is location, location, location.  Specifically, being close to North Carolina's mountains.  You've got to understand, we grew up in Texas.  It's flatter than a pool table.  And the only snow you see is the fake stuff on your flocked Christmas Tree.  So, to our family in general (and her in particular), the Asheville area of North Carolina mountains during the holidays is magic.  Apparently, House Beautiful agrees as Asheville comes in at number eight on their list of most festive holiday towns.

The Biltmore Estate is a HUGE reason for this.  Debbie's been obsessed with it since 1995 and I must admit, there is NOTHING like the Candlelight Christmas Tour of the historic Vanderbilt mansion.  To say the folks there go all out for Christmas, may be the understatement of the season.

However, Biltmore Estate isn't the only attraction.  Main Street Asheville at night is spectacular with more than one million lights.

Other holiday season events in Asheville include the Gingerbread House Competition at the Omni Grove Park Inn (November 21st).  And the after dark winter wonderland light show put on by the North Carolina Arboretum.  That begins on November 18th.  New to the area?  Never experienced Asheville's holiday magic?  Check the town's official site to set up your mountain trip itinerary.
