South Carolina Cake Makes Oprah’s Favorites List
A South Carolina cake has made Oprah’s favorites list for 2022. This year’s “Oprah’s Favorite Things” includes the Sweet Potato Cake from Caroline’s Cakes in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Winfrey said on her website OprahDaily that she has highlighted other treats from Caroline’s before. But, her friend Gayle had become very fond of the new sweet potato cake. She points to the lightness of the cake and the tang of cream cheese frosting as what she loves most. Caroline’s offers the cake on their website. Oprah’s list says the cake is also available on Amazon for $70. Of course, Sweet Potato cake is a Southern classic. Caroline’s hopes to see the cake donning tables across the country for the holidays.
Caroline Ragsdale Reutter didn’t start out baking. Her background was in interior design. However, she came from a long line of wonderful cooks who loved to entertain. Food celebrations surrounded her life, and she learned that it brought joy to people. One of her first successful cakes that gained notoriety was her 7-layer Caramel Cake. She served it at her son’s christening in 1982. Before she knew it, word spread and things took off. People as far away as Alaska and Hawaii wanted the cake. A baker in South Carolina helped make the cakes in the beginning until falling ill. That was when the pivotal moment came. Caroline had to learn to perfect the cake herself. Another of their best sellers is a 7-layer Coconut Cloud Cake. Wow, I might just have to look into that. Coconut is my favorite! Caroline’s mission is to “make the world a smaller and sweeter place through time-honored Southern recipes. ” And you can get them mailed right to your door!
In addition to this year’s recognition, the 7-layer Coconut Cloud Cake at Caroline’s Cakes made Oprah’s Favorites list in 2017. So, now I know I have to check it out! Caroline passed away in 2017, but her family carries on the legacy using the recipes she perfected.
