Rumor has it that Beech Mountain, North Carolina may see a white Christmas in 2023. That would be amazing and I will believe it when I see it. Here is the real reason why we stock up on milk and bread before a storm. You know you are going to (and so am I), but why do we do it?
According to Accuweather.com , people from the New England states can take credit for the tradition of purchasing milk and bread prior to a storm. Accuweather goes on to say that it was a biblical blizzard in 1978 that trapped a lot of people in their homes for weeks on end. An article from November 24, 1950 detailed a milk shortage brought on by the catastrophic winter storm. These incidents have had lasting effects for pre storm rituals.
So, the real reason why we stock up on milk and bread before a storm is an antiquated idea. But it never fails, every time the weather man predicts anything north of rain in the winter people lose their minds.
