It is really sung everywhere at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve. Why 'Auld Lang Syne' has special meaning to some in North Carolina on New Year's Eve makes perfect sense.

Scottish history runs deep in North Carolina especially in the mountains.  Many people coming over from Scotland when the state was still a colony, found the mountains in North Carolina looked very similar to their homeland. If you don't believe me, just ask Jamie Fraser on 'Outlander';) The fact that the Scots loved to settle in North Carolina is often found in pop culture. Many Scottish people are settled in the Wilmington area as well.

Band director Guy Lombardo started ending his New Year's Eve shows in New York city back in the 1920's and 1930's, with 'Auld Lang Syne'.  It is based on a Scottish poem by Robert Burns and loosely means "times gone by'. And to this day it is sung at every party in every town in the United States.

Here in North Carolina, especially in our highland regions and coastal, it is sometimes sung with exceptional emotion and gusto. Because the song reminds many of their deep Scottish roots. My mom who has Scottish ancestry, used to tear up thinking of her mom as that song was sung each year.
