I have a great deal of respect for teachers and the lives of children they shape each day. Charlie’s mom is a life long educator. And, his sister spent many years as a public school teacher. It’s nice to hear good news and recognition coming to a deserving teacher. A Charlotte schools band director will be receiving a very special award later this month. According to WBTV, Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology’s Walter Suggs is the winner of the Manilow Music Project Music Teacher Award. And yes, it’s Manilow as in Barry Manilow. Full disclosure, Barry Manilow remains one of my favorite artists of all time. He performs in Charlotte later this month. So, the man himself will be here to present Suggs with the honor.
Each city where the artist performs, selects a teacher for the award. The award is $5000 in cash and $5000 in “Manilow bucks.” The Manilow bucks allows teachers to purchase instruments for their music program. The Spectrum Center and CMS schools nominated Suggs. Over the years, the Manilow Music Project has given away over $10 million worth of funds and instrument donations. Manilow performs Saturday, January 21 at Spectrum Center.
Walter Suggs graduated from NCCU with a degree in music education in 1993. He earned a master’s degree from Winthrop University in 2009. See here learn more about the performance date, show time and info. Just four months ago the award was given to a teacher in Rhode Island. And soon, Charlotte schools band director Walter Suggs will have a similar experience.
