Grocery Store Company Expanding With New Store In Kannapolis, NC

A North Carolina grocery chain continues to expand in the Charlotte market, this time with a store planned in Kannapolis. A Concord store also is expected to open soon. According to the Charlotte Observer, Lowes Foods will open a 50,887-square-foot store at Kellswater Commons in Kannapolis.

Lowes Foods has three Charlotte-area locations, in Mooresville, Harrisburg and Huntersville. It competes with other North Carolina chains like Harris Teeter based in Matthews and Food Lion in Salisbury, as well as Florida-based Publix, German discount grocers Lidl and Aldi, and Asheville specialty grocer Earth Fare.

No word on an opening date.

Food Trends For 2023

I am a self-proclaimed “foodie.” I literally and figuratively devour anything food news related. With the new year, food trends typically evolve a bit depending on what’s popular with diets and healthy eating. Or, it might take influence from social media trends like the TikTok Butter Boards of last year. What food trends for 2023 can we expect? The wickednoodle.com gave us some possible things to look for in the coming year. A few of them I’m already on board with. However, others aren’t necessarily my jam. We all remember the pumpkin spice craze of years past. That one never seems to go away. And, I’m okay with that.  Spicy foods, Asian cuisine, Kimchi and anything fermented or pickled always seem to trend. Lately, I hear more and more about “mocktails.” Many people are giving “Dry January” a go of it. According to wickednoodle, THC-infused foods continue to gain attention, too. Those are what they refer to as “mood food.” It shows up in everything from entrees, candy, desserts and cocktails. But, let’s take a look at a few of the other food trends for 2023.

  • Swicy Food

    This was a new term for me. However, I have been eating it for years without realizing it. It simply means a combination of sweet and spicy. It’s one of my favorites. Just think about something that might include a blending of chocolate and chile peppers, or hot honey with fried chicken. Chicken and waffles or Nashville Hot Chicken are among the best foods on the planet.  One of the most famous spots for Hot Chicken is Prince’s in Nashville.

  • Mocktails

    As I mentioned earlier, these are really trending now because of the “Dry January” movement.  It’s like a reset for the new year in the realm of resolutions for health and well-being.  Many people have a variety of reasons for seeking out the alcohol free cocktail.  And, they’ve been around forever.  Familiar mocktails are the Shirley Temple, Roy Rogers, and “virgin” varieties of anything from Cosmo’s to Margaritas.  A new mocktail spot opened recently in Wilmington,
    North Carolina with plenty of events planned for a “Dry January.”

  • Butter Boards

    The oddly curious TikTok sensation of last year doesn’t seem to be disappearing.  The Butter Board is like taking the traditional charcuterie board and morphing it into pretty much anything your imagination allows.  Butter Board “artists” use the board as a palette and the offset spatula as their trowel.  The dollops of butter are “spackled” onto the board as a base.  Then, the spaces are adorned with fruits, nuts, meats and cheeses that fill regular charcuterie boards.  Toasts and crackers scoop up the goodness.  But, it didn’t stop there.  We saw frosting boards, chocolate hazelnut spread dessert boards.  It really took off.  I even got in on the trend with my own attempt.

  • Functional Food

    Another item that hit the trend list is “Functional Food.”  I think of this as more bang for your nutritional buck.  These are foods that we can enjoy while also benefitting from the ingredients in the way of nutrition, mood boosting and gut friendliness.  This might include fermented items including yogurt, sauerkraut, pickles and the aforementioned kimchi.  I am on board with this trend because I love pickling anything.  I always enjoy a good Bahn Mi with pickled veggies just to mention one dish.

  • Mushrooms

    I enjoy mushrooms in a number of dishes.  I never thought of them as particularly trendy.  However, they made the wicked noodle list due to the sustainability and use in restaurants.  Food researchers point to specialty mushrooms such as Oyster varieties and Trumpet mushrooms gaining momentum.  Of course, the ones we see most often are the basic button, or more interesting shiitakes, portabellas and criminis.  However, in my experience, some varieties need to be used sparingly due to their price point.  I do love them, though.  And, they incorporate so well in many dishes.
