So, we reach the time in our lives when folks we grew up watching on TV start to pass. Admittedly, I am about to geek out a little bit here. But, I hate to see that one of my teen heartthrob stars of a 1970s coming of age series died this week. Extra TV reported Lance Kerwin passed away at the age of 62. Kerwin starred in the dramatic series “James at 15.” Of course, producers updated the title as the series progressed becoming “James at 16.” The series centered on “James,” whose family moved cross country from Oregon to Boston. James experienced all the growing pains of teens, including trouble fitting in at a new school. The show ran only from 1977-1978. But, having a bit of a crush, I never missed an episode.
Those of us who collected the teen rag Tiger Beat magazine were giddy to see our favorite guys grace the cover. I bought one every week. And, I think the teen heartthrob appeared in it many times, along with Scott Baio, Jimmy McNichol and more. Kerwin’s daughter, Savanah shared the news of the star’s passing in a Facebook post. She expressed gratitude for kind words, memories and prayers fans shared, telling fans he loved them all. Kerwin, whose dad was an acting coach and mom a performer and agent, got his start in 1974. The actor appeared in an episode of “Emergency.” He guested on shows including “Little House On The Prairie” and “Gunsmoke.” Also, he made appearances in “ABC Afterschool Specials.” Those were always fun. LOL. His work continued into the 80s and ended with a role in “Outbreak” in 1995. Kerwin returned only once after that in 2022’s “The Wind & The Reckoning.” He is survived by a wife of over 20 years and children.
