South Carolina Chefs Whipped the World’s Toughest Row
Have you ever tried to row a boat? Do you know how long it would take to row a boat more than 3,000 miles over the open ocean? Two South Carolina chef veterans took on the challenge and completed it in 40 days. How crazy is that? Every year an annual oceangoing competition billed as “the world’s toughest row” happens and these two chefs took on the challenge.
Garden & Gun reports Towill and Layton, cofounders of Charleston restaurant group took the on the world’s toughest row. Towill has always been interested in Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge and finally got to do it. Both chefs were rookies when it came to rowing so the first step was learning. Between a local trainer and kayak-style rowboats, preparation began in the Charleston waters. The practice led up to their three-day rows between Florida and South Carolina. According to the article, that’s 180-220 miles of rowing.
On December 12, the team began getting ready for their voyage. They pushed off the dock in Morocco to begin their row. There were 9 other boats as their rivals during the trip. After 40 days and over 3,000 miles, the pair made it to the end! They were the first two-person team to complete the row. Read more about their story and the interview here.
