Super Sick Monday-What’s It All About
Now that the “Big Game” is over, what happens next? Apparently, it’s a phenomenon called Super Sick Monday. According to Business News Daily, record numbers of employees call in sick on the Monday following the game. In fact, about 16.1 million Americans skip on “Super Sick Monday.” And, about 8 million request the day off ahead of time. Well, at least they have the courtesy to plan ahead. Therefore, the record numbers of absences leads many to wonder if the day should be declared a holiday. Of course, plenty of workers think it’s a great idea. But, there’s even a large number of HR managers who agree. A survey by Office Team indicates at least 72% of the managers support making the day a paid holiday. In fact, studies show more than a third of people in management positions take the day off.
And, employees typically say they skip on Super Sick Monday due to fatigue, nausea and hangovers. Businesses in 2020 say the absences cost them $4 billion in decreased productivity. So, is there an argument to be made for the “holiday?” Well, plenty of online petitions circulate. And, lawmakers in some states attempt to introduce bills to designate the day. But, there has yet to be any progress toward making it happen. According to managers, the unplanned aspect of the absence is what causes the most disruption. Therefore, consultants recommend making sure employees feel comfortable asking for the day ahead of time. And, they suggest enticing attendance by hosting a free lunch Monday. Or, in keeping with today’s trends allow people to work from home. So, for now it remains just another Monday or Super Sick Monday. Am I the only one who wishes the game started earlier? And, I also know that will never happen LOL.
