High School In North Carolina Investment In Body Scanners Pays Off

Unfortunately, we wake up to news of violence in schools way too often. But, one high school in North Carolina has good news to report on that front. Harding University High School in Charlotte once identified as having a “high number of safety incidents.” However, after the district invested millions of dollars in body scanners, the school reports a different story. WCNC reports an historic number of guns showed up on Charlotte campuses last year. But, with the help of scanners on some campuses, the district says the number dropped to 3 this year compared to 25 during the same time last year. The district chose 7 schools to participate in the body scanner initiative. The Harding principal says they remain extremely excited about the changing culture. He says the safety issues at the school also came from having a partially open campus with multiple entry points. And, as of now, Harding reports no guns found this year.
Also, along with the body scanners Harding added cameras and a wristband system. The principal says students receive a wristband after going through the scanning process. This indicates they are cleared. And, the colors change each day. Then, teachers check the wristbands throughout the day. Harding University High School always catches our attention in particular because it is my mother-in-law’s alma mater. Of course, her time at the school in the late 50’s was much different. I’m sure she couldn’t have imagined a time when her school would need scanners and wrist bands. But, if this measure helps keep students safe it is worth it. And, it seems as though this high school in North Carolina’s investment in the scanners is paying off.
