South Carolina Lawmaker Wants To Charge People For Moving There
We all know moving to a different state comes with challenges. Of course, changing driver’s licenses and registration are usually first on the list. And, those tasks usually come with hefty fees depending on the state. But, now a South Carolina lawmaker proposes those moving into the state pay an additional fee. South Carolina has become quite popular in recent years. In fact, we just relocated to the state a couple of years ago. And, I faced sticker shock when it came time to register our cars, pay property taxes and car insurance. So, in a WCNC report, we learn Senator Stephen Goldfinch introduced a new piece of legislation to add more fees. The senator complains that current residents are “literally paying for roads, bridges, utilities, schools and greenspace” that people moving in get to take advantage of. Of course, once in the state, we all pay anyway.
And, data suggests South Carolina’s population soared by almost 90,000 people from July 2021 to July 2022. And, Census numbers indicate most of those relocating come from Georgia, North Carolina and Florida. Also, many moving to the state include retirees. The Senator points out that retirees only pay sales taxes due to their retired status. The new legislation could be put on a ballot by county council ordinance or petition. Then, voters would have the chance to decide on the fees. And, voters would have an opportunity to say how they want the money spent. The South Carolina lawmaker proposes a $250 driver’s license fee and a $250 vehicle licensing registration fee on new state residents.
North and South Carolina Voted Among States With the Best Weather Year Round
Maybe you are contemplating relocating this year. Or maybe you want a new go-to vacation spot. Either way, you are probably calculating the weather in some states to see what it’s like. Some people like to plan their vacations based on the average weather in the area during that time of year. I have a winter birthday and tend to book trips to destinations that are warmer so I can get a feel for summer during my birthday. Some people would prefer it to feel pretty close to summer or at least not too cold, all year round.
Current Results knows how much people care about a destination having great weather year-round. So, they calculated a list of states with the best weather year-round. Shockingly, both the Carolinas made the top 10. I guess when you think about it, even when we’re cold down here it is not half as bad as the northern winter areas. To make the list, the states meet the following criteria:
- Comfortable temperatures, with daily highs averaging between 63 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit for at least half of the year
- Dry weather, at most 60 in. of rain a year
- Mainly clear skies, with sunshine for at least 60% of daylight time on a yearly average
Check out the list below to see where the Carolinas fall compared to other states.
