Earthquake Registered In South Carolina Friday Night

If you felt the earth move in parts of South Carolina last night you were not imagining things. An earthquake was registered in Chesterfield County, South Carolina Friday night. According to the U.S. Geological Survey it was 2.4 magnitude around 7:45 pm.
The quake’s epicenter in Jefferson was about 30 miles southeast of Union County.
While the earthquake could be felt by some no damages or injuries have been reported. Emergency management officials in Chesterfield County say they are aware and to not contact them unless you have been injured by the natural phenomenon.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey earthquakes are very common. Almost one million earthquakes happen every year. According to the experts they occur when there is a slip on a fault line occurs and the earth shakes. According to google, earthquakes are not all that uncommon in South Carolina, “Approximately 10 to 15 earthquakes are recorded annually in South Carolina with 3 to 5 of them felt or noticed by people. About 70 percent of South Carolina earthquakes are located in the Middleton Place-Summerville Seismic Zone.”
The South Carolina department of Natural Resources says this is what you should do in the event of an earthquake, “Get under a desk or table and avoid outside walls, especially glass walls. If outside, move to an area where you will be safe from falling trees, utility poles, or debris from buildings. If driving in a car, avoid bridges, underpasses, and overpasses.”
