This news literally hits close to home for us. We live in Indian Land, and we travel this stretch of highway every day. And, if you drive U.S. 521 you probably notice the congestion. This certainly rings true near the 160 intersection. After conducting studies, transportation officials proposed several different options to help with traffic flow. Regardless, this well traveled Indian Land road might undergo big changes in the future. The Charlotte Observer reports that one proposal discussed allows only right or left turns off S.C. 160. And, traffic wishing to go straight across 160 or turn left off 521 would be required to pass the intersection and make U-turns ahead. Although it sounds confusing, I think it sounds similar to something in place in the Indian Trail area along Highway 74.
An engineering company conducted a study of the Indian Land stretch of 521 and recommended other upgrades. The travel area includes about 9 miles from the North Carolina state line to Waxhaw Highway. We may see changes at Marvin Rd. as well as Jim Wilson and Dobys Bridge Rd. The report studied options for expanding Charlotte Highway to 6 lanes. And, of course other ideas incorporate hybrids of several suggestions. Reports estimate project costs range from just over $100 million to $142 million depending on the option. The study points to growth in the area at high rates as of late. The Charlotte Observer reports that David Hooper of the Rock Hill Fort Mill Area Transit study says the Lancaster County area being looked at is "the single fastest growing area from here to Hickory." It's a complex issue for sure. So, for details take a look at a more in depth explanation. But, with continued growth, this well traveled Indian Land South Carolina Road might look different in the future.
