One person bought a $2 Mega Millions ticket Tuesday in Indian Trail worth $1 million. So, we have a million dollar lottery winner in North Carolina. Is it you?  According to WCNC, the winner picked up a ticket at a Food Lion on Idlewild Road in Union County.  And, the million dollar prize comes from matching numbers on all five white balls.  So, now the lucky person who purchased the winning ticket needs to claim their prize within 180 days from the date of the drawing.  And, you can bet everyone right now is checking those tickets.  Unfortunately, it wasn’t me.  But, hopefully it’s you.  Check for the numbers: 1, 7, 23, 38, 55 on white balls.

However, if you didn’t happen for you this time, never fear.  No winner in Tuesday’s Mega Millions means the Friday prize jumps to $254 million that equates to $133.7 million cash.  The North Carolina Education Lottery website says prizes of $100,00 or more must be claimed in person at the NC Lottery Headquarters in Raleigh. So, best of luck if you choose to participate.  And, let those dreams soar.  However, always play responsibly.  Also, if you or someone you know has a problem with gambling, there are numbers you can call.  The NC Problem Gambling Hotline is 1-877-718-5543.  The National hot line is 1-800-522-4700.

And, if you do win, experts have some advice for you.  They suggest making copies of the ticket and securing it.  Meet with an advisor to decide how to handle the winnings.  Sign your ticket, plan ahead for taxes and prepare for your future appropriately.  And, congratulations to the million dollar winner in Indian Trail, North Carolina!  And, who knows…you could find yourself the next one holding one of those oversized checks!  Update to the story:  We now know the winner was Anna Papp of Monroe, North Carolina.  She claimed her prize Wednesday at lottery  headquarters in Raleigh.  After taxes, she took home more than $700,000.

How Americans Play Lottery and What They’d Do If They Won

Tonight is the big night people.  It is the Mega Millions drawing and Americans are ready to win the money! What if you won the lottery? My first thing would be paying off my bills, putting some away, and then most likely I would take a vacation.

The US has had a handful of record-setting lottery jackpots this year, and Americans are looking to get in on the action. A new report shows nearly a quarter of Americans play the lottery at least once a month, and almost half (44%) say they play more when there’s a big jackpot on the line.

Those who do strike it rich often try to keep the winnings quiet. 83% of Americans say they wouldn’t want to tell others if they won. Significant others are in luck though – people say they’d give their SO a little more than 25%, but also said they’d expect more than 25% if the roles were reversed. You can take a look at the full report here.

  • Nearly 50% say they would need to win at least $4 million in order to quit their job

  • Top purchases after winning: home, vacation, car
