Just Where Is Artificial Intelligence Taking Us?
It’s high time that someone asks, just where is Artificial Intelligence taking us?
I remain skeptical that AI will be managed properly, mainly because of the race to be first with new developments. Haste makes waste.
Aside from the rush to inject AI into everything possible, I’m also worried about the alarming number of reports about how easy it is to misuse Artificial Intelligence. Rest assured that AI will take a lot of the legwork out of fraud and misinformation. Imagine phishing scams with the relentless power of AI. Without proper control, it will be easier than ever to use the technology to defraud unsuspecting victims.
Another reason I’m skeptical is because it seems that automated crap is already annoying enough. The never-ending flow of spam into my inbox surely won’t get any better with more Artificial Intelligence. I am confident AI will bring us more and more of the things we already hate.
Then there’s the obvious issue wherein computers are only as good as the information that goes into them. What if the training data is manipulated? How long before Artificial Intelligence begins helping itself to your sensitive data? Does AI already have a hand in managing, say, your healthcare information?
Fears about the future of Artificial Intelligence prompted billionaire Elon Musk and many others to sign an open letter calling for a six-month moratorium on all AI developments.
“AI systems with human-competitive intelligence can pose profound risks to society and humanity,” the letter reads. Developers are “locked in an out-of-control race to develop and deploy ever more powerful digital minds that no one – not even their creators – can understand, predict, or reliably control.”
