Student Encountered Bat In North Carolina High School Leading To Surprise Discovery
Earlier this week we learned about officials finding more than 20 bats in Ardrey Kell High School in Charlotte. And, the school announced a switch to remote learning for a couple of days while they worked to fix the bat problem. Now, as students get ready to return to the hallways Friday, there’s a new development. WCNC reports a student encountered a bat in the North Carolina high school bathroom Tuesday.
The sophomore says she was in the bathroom at Ardrey Kell High School in between classes when the bat flew down from a stall and landed on her leg. However, she only discovered the bat scratched her leg after she got home. Health Department officials confirmed the wound was a bat scratch. And, they advised the student to start rabies vaccinations, which will last two weeks.
Animal Care and Control sent 21 bats to be tested. And, according to reports 17 tested negative for rabies, and officials wait for results for the last four. In the meantime, Ardrey Kell indicates remediation was ongoing to prevent further entrance from more bats.
I remember an encounter I had with a bat when I was in 5th grade. We lived near a park with an old pavilion with rafters. Apparently a bat ventured from the park to my house. I was pulling on a branch in my front yard when the bat fell out of the tree and onto my foot. I can confirm I never before ran that fast in my life. In fact, I literally scaled a fence to get into the house.
Anyway, Mecklenburg County advises residents who may notice bats in or around their home to call 311 or 704-336-7600. And, see here to read more about the surprising discovery after the student encountered a bat in her North Carolina High School.
