North Carolina D-Day War Hero Is The Last Of His Kind
I say this out loud every year. Here’s all you need to know about the character of those that fought in World War II. They were normal, everyday people who answered their country’s call to fight for freedom. They saved the world from evil and then came home to build the best nation the world has ever seen. You know who has that resume? Them and Superman. That’s it, that’s the list. It seems with each passing moment we lose another member of our heroic greatest generation.
Today is June 6th. On this date in 1944 Winston-Salem’s Horace Barrett was a member of the US Army’s 82nd Airborne Division that parachuted into France. Operation Overlord. D-Day. This was the moment when America stepped into the European theater of WWII to free France and Europe from Germany’s Nazi tyranny. He’s the last of his unit.
Barrett’s military career is marked by fighting in Operation Market Garden in Holland and the Battle of the Bulge. He was He was awarded two Bronze Stars and four Purple Hearts.
Horace Barrett will hopefully see his 100th birthday this December. On this, the 79th anniversary of the D-Day Invasion, as thankful as I am he is still here to be honored, I’m saddened that of his unit, he now stands alone.
Wesley Bailey is an attorney in Winston-Salem. He is quoted in the Winston-Salem Journal, “I think about the thousands of boys who lost their lives during the war so that we can have the freedom we have today. We ought to remember the price that was paid for what we’re now enjoying.”
December 7, 1941 (Pearl Harbor attack). June 6, 1944. These are two ENORMOUSLY important days in our nation’s history. Unfortunately, they have become afterthoughts. We owe the thousands that gave their lives in World War II more.
By reading this. By remembering and honoring Horace Barrett, perhaps we pay homage to them all.
