I don't believe this will come up a lot in most conversations. However, it is OK to bury a loved one in your backyard in North Carolina. There are some restrictions though. But you can bury a relative's body in your backyard in North Carolina.

According to the Charlotte Observer home burials are legal. The question seems to have come up after a woman went viral for burying her mother in her backyard. So if you decided this is the way you want to go, here are some rules.

State law requires that all burials or cemeteries must be at least 300 feet from a water supply. I think you can see how that makes sense. Also, state law requires the top of “burial vaults or other encasements,” must be at least 18 inches below the ground.

It also makes sense to check with your local zoning office. By the way, caskets are not required. I would suggest it though. Just saying.

I know that lots of people used to have family cemeteries on their property years ago. So I would assume these are rules that have not been looked at in many years.

So how about spreading ashes? It's OK to scatter ashes on your own private property. If you want to scatter ashes on someone else’s property, you must get written permission from the landowner and give it to the crematory.

That means Disney is out of the question. They have a huge problem with people trying to do that at the parks. People have devised all kinds of ways o sneak their dearly departed into the Magic Kingdom so they can become part of one of the rides. Not allowed, and not a good idea.

So North Carolina is OK as long as it's your property and you follow a few simple rules.

These are the Leading Causes of Death in North Carolina

To me, death has never been taboo. It's something a lot of us think about but never speak on. Death is a topic some people prefer not to discuss, but we cannot escape it. Nobody has ever managed to escape it.

People die every single day, which isn't a fun thing to talk about. That's why we have to live every day as if it were our last. According to the CDC, the average age of death in North Carolina is 78.1 years old as of 2019.

It may not be pleasant, but it is a part of life. I think you will enjoy this list if you are a morbid person, just like me. The following is a list of North Carolina's leading causes of death. All 2020 data are final. 2020 birth data come from the National Vital Statistics System (NVSS) via CDC WONDER; 2020 death data, including leading causes of death, firearm mortality, homicide, drug overdose mortality, and infant mortality, come from the NVSS via CDC WONDER and rankings and rates are based on 2020 age-adjusted death rates.
