Southern Living Says This Is The Best South Carolina Road Trip To Take This Fall
If there is one thing I love it’s a road trip. Especially in the fall. Enjoying the scenery while driving to your destination, can be just as fun as the destination itself. And in the fall, that’s amplified. The gorgeous vibrant colors on the trees provide the perfect backdrop for that perfect scenic drive. As someone who drives across the state almost weekly during the fall (yay football season!) I get to take in a lot of the changing of the leaves throughout the center of our state. But it’s the mountains that are best known for “leaf season”. That being said both North and South Carolina have some fantastic foliage. And if you’re looking to see the fall colors on a South Carolina road trip this fall, here’s where you should look!
Southern Living recently compiled a list of the best Southern road trips in the fall and one South Carolina road trip made the list. It’s not the mountains, however, like the multiple NC drives featured. Instead in South Carolina, they chose to highlight the Lowcountry. While the color may not be as vibrant as places with higher elevations, it is still something to see. They choose to recognize the color of the Spartina grass which becomes a golden color in the fall resembling the color and shape of wheat. Often wild birds choose to hang around in the grasses as well, making it a unique fall destination.
Plus the closer you get to the coast, the less crowded spots seem to be during the autumn months. While Southern Living didn’t specify a destination the Lowcountry region is made up of Beaufort, Jasper, Colleton, and Hampton counties. Some will extend the region up to the islands surrounding Charleston. Beaufort would be a fantastic place to take a drive to this time of year.
