My wife and I live together, work together, have raised a child together, basically have done nothing but "together" for the last 30 years.  And I wouldn't change a thing.  That being said, because of this, we value our time apart.  We have to.  So, I've never understood guys who play golf with their wives.  I've never understood guys who play tennis or pickleball with their wives.  And I certainly don't understand these guys who compete in The North American Wife Carrying Championship.

Just because I don't get the thinking behind the decision to compete, doesn't mean I don't LOVE watching it.  I do.  If you've never seen this, here's the deal.  The North American Wife Carrying Championship takes place annually at Sunday River in Newry, Maine (in fact, this Saturday, October 7).  The men carry their wives anyway they choose over a 278-yard obstacle course that includes hurdles, a mud pit, and a less than steady ascent.  The prize?  5 times the wife's weight in beer AND her weight in cash.

Back to my confusion as to "why."  I just don't think the juice can possibly justify the squeeze.  Here's what I mean.  One, when you watch the video below, pay attention to the method of carrying.  There's no way any woman finds this a flattering look.  Two, what happens when and if you drop your wife?  Think she's going to be happy about that?  Think she won't be showing you the bruises from that every day until they disappear?  Think again.

Oh, and I hear you saying, "Well, what if you're the winner?"  Okay.  To get the beer and the cash, the winning wife's weight becomes public knowledge.  Today, say this to your wife, "Honey, I think I want your weight published in every form of media."

Now do you see my point?

The North American Wife Carrying Championship, full of male competitors who haven't thought this through, takes place this Saturday at Sunday River in Newry, Maine.
